Q. What sparked your interest in paediatric nursing?

“I have always loved children. I became an aunt as a 10 year old and I spent my teenage years caring for my growing brood of 12 nephews and nieces.

“For me, it was primary school teaching versus paediatric nursing. At the time there was a glut of unemployed teachers, so nursing won.”

Q. How is paediatric nursing different from caring for adults?

“People have often asked me isn’t it hard to look after sick children, to see them ill, don’t you feel sad?

“My reply is that when adults are sick or in pain they are more likely to be aware of all the potential bad things that could happen and worry – even when you give them pain relief they wonder how long until it wears off and the pain returns.

“Children are different, they accept innocently the cares offered and if the pain is gone away then they are happy. If they can have their favourite teddy, mum, dad or iPad they can be easily distracted.

“Their parents are usually grateful for the care given to their precious children for fixing things they can’t. They also appreciate the care and support given to them, the holisitic approach, including siblings etc.

“Children are more often only in hospital for a short time, come in sick and go out better – not necessarily the case with adults.

“Lastly, a paediatric nurse has the perfect excuse to be silly, have fun, sing, launch and dance – which is not always so acceptable on adult wards.”

Q. What is the most rewarding thing about working at St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals’ paediatric unit?

“Our paediatric unit is such a rewarding place to work. The environment is fresh, bright and fun. The unit is purpose built so has all the facilities which make it excellent, like a playroom, a parent lounge, huge bathrooms, a child friendly procedure room and enhanced security.

“We have Radio Lollipop volunteers visit for fun and laughter, even a teacher for those who need it.

“But the real thing that makes it great is the our team of amazing dedicated caring nurses and brilliant doctors and a whole multi-disciplinary team of caregivers too.”

Q. What do you wish all parents knew when they bring their child into hospital?

“I wish parents knew that when they bring their child into hospital, we feel privileged to become part of their team and that we all want to work together to help their child. That we know that they know their child better than anyone else and that their knowledge is invaluable.

“They should know that we will always do our best and that we encourage them to ask questions if they are unsure.”
