2023 Doctors in Training Hospital Health Check survey results
12 Jul 2023
St John of God Health Care has performed exceptionally well in the annual Doctors in Training Hospital Health Check survey.
St John of God Health Care places great focus on providing a dedicated, supportive learning environment for all our junior doctors. Building team morale, embedding a collaborative culture and ensuring that staff have access to leave are all areas where our concerted efforts have seen an overall improvement for this year’s survey.
Having received the highest ranking of WA hospitals across five of the seven Hospital Health Check focus areas, we are grateful to our Doctors in Training community for recognising us as the best overall employer. This is an encouraging outcome and reflective of the values driven leadership approach that is unique to St John of God Health Care.
Moving forwards, we need to work hard to maintain our ranking, reflect on the areas in which we still have room to improve and actively implement strategies to ensure a better workplace experience for the members of our Doctors in Training community.
Since the last survey we have continued to actively recruit Doctors in Training to ensure that our Doctors in Training workloads are kept as manageable as possible. We have also implemented an electronic overtime claim system bypassing many of the barriers to Doctors in Training claiming payment for the work done. We are also close to finalising a country program for Resident Medical Officers starting in January 2024.
Despite our results there remain significant issues that continue to impact on Doctors in Training experience. Like many publicly funded hospitals, our St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals has significant capacity issues which will largely be addressed with the recent announcement by the Government to increase public bed stock by 60 overnight beds from 2026. St John of God Health Care are also planning a new private hospital to open in Midland in 2026. These initiatives will also create opportunities for Doctors in Training to work with us and experience the type of results that we have achieved this year.
