“I’m interested in general surgery because of the wide variety of cases I see on a daily basis,” Joel says.
“Not only is every patient different but the problems they present with are different too which means I often need a different solution to every problem I encounter.”
“Surgery is also all about teamwork, and being able to work well together with the anaesthetic and nursing staff is so important for good outcomes for the patient. I really enjoy the teamwork aspect of my job, where together we ensure our patients receive the best possible care.”
Joel works as part of the general surgery team in both the public and private hospitals. The team offers a range of procedures from cancer surgery and hernia and gallbladder surgery to minor excisions of lumps and bumps.
“The subspecialties we offer at Midland include a wide range of colorectal, endocrine, breast and some benign upper GI procedures. We are also hoping to set up a private bariatric service at Midland in due course,” Joel says.
“We also offer an endoscopy and colonoscopy service. As well as all this we see and treat the full range of emergency general surgery including appendicitis, cholecystitis, perforated ulcers, diverticulitis, pancreatitis and abscesses.”
