Doors open to new Intensive Care Unit

St John of God Geelong Hospital (SJGGH) recently opened the doors to its new Intensive Care Unit (ICU), significantly expanding the provision of intensive care in Geelong.

The service’s first patients were transferred into the new ICU on Monday morning following a period of extensive planning and commissioning to ensure all aspects of patient safety were carefully managed.

The new 12-bed ICU is the first phase of a $21m development to further enhance the hospital’s goal to be recognised as regional Australia’s leading private hospital.

The ICU service plays a critical role in supporting patients requiring complex care following major surgery or life-threatening conditions such as organ failure. It ensures the best possible clinical interventions are available to patients in Geelong.

The new unit provides the latest technology available and has integrated a range of unique design features including a cathedral ceiling and skylights to create a unique ambience for patients and their families.

This is the latest stage in SJGGH’s ongoing expansion and service growth and follows on from the $67m redevelopment completed in 2014.

SJGGH CEO Stephen Roberts said the hospital has been part of the fabric of Geelong for many decades and is committed to continuing to transform using innovation to create new and enhanced services such as cardiac surgery, the Emergency Department and the new ICU.

“This new ICU is a key step in ensuring that Geelong patients continue to have access to the latest advances in medicine and a patient experience that undeniably focusses on the unique needs of each patient,” he said.

Demolition of the old Clancy House facility was completed last year to make way for the new ICU.
