The second annual Great South West Bed Race will be returning to Bunbury on April 7 2018 and organisers are encouraging teams to start training now.

With a new and improved 2.3km racecourse around Bunbury’s CBD, the race takes in some of Bunbury’s most iconic landmarks, including The Silos, Marlston Hill, The Lighthouse, Back Beach and the Bunbury Tower.

City streets will be temporarily closed for the race and Bicentennial Square will be transformed into ‘Bed Race Square’ with food trucks, live music, free kids entertainment and markets sure to keep all members of the family entertained.

St John of God Bunbury Hospital Chief Executive Officer Mark Grime said the event helped raised vital funds for patients.

"This event aims to not only put Bunbury on the map as ‘the City that holds the Bed Race’ but also to raise funds in our community to directly benefit our community. All monies raised here stay here,” he said.

Funds raised from the 2017 race went towards the purchase of scalp-cooling caps, which aid to minimise hair loss in patients receiving certain chemotherapy treatments.

“Maintenance of appearance is really important to some of our oncology patients, with the loss of hair just another reminder of the side effects of treatment. If we can help to minimise this for our patients, we will have succeeded in providing compassionate care closer to home for South West residents," Mr Grime said.
