COVID postive maternity patients
The increasing numbers of covid cases in our community and hospitals has led the government to implement a Code Brown.
This has changed the way all hospitals are caring for people who have tested COVID positive.
COVID positive maternity patients - new care delivery model
Previously all maternity patients who tested positive were transferred to a COVID Streaming hospital for care.
From 27 January patients diagnosed with COVID-19 will remain onsite at St John of God Berwick Hospital for the entirety of their admission.
Dedicated areas in birthing suites, theatres and post-natal areas enable care to be delivered safely for all patients.
Our caregivers are trained to deliver care to patients with infectious illness and over the last two years have developed specific procedures to deal with management of COVID-19 to keep you and your baby be safe.
If there are concerns about the health status of the mother or baby and your obstetrician or paediatrician believes that your care needs are better served in another facility we will transfer you or your baby to this service.
Early discharge options will be provided for patients who would like to return home as restrictions on movement of COVID positive patients will be required.
COVID positive partners
We recognise that the birth of a child is a special time and where possible we will try to enable a covid positive partner to attend the birth of their child.
This will be assessed on a case by case basis and will require the partner to be fully vaccinated, asymptomatic and be able to wear personal protection equipment to ensure they do not pose a
high risk to our health care workers.
In this circumstance the partner will be allocated a staff member to escort them during their time onsite.
The partner will be required to leave the hospital following the birth.
We understand that this is a difficult time for all patients and their partners.
