A new da Vinci Xi Surgical System is now being used at the hospital to assist surgeons caring for patients who need urological or gynaecological surgery.

St John of God Berwick Hospital Chief Executive Officer Lisa Norman said having the latest robotic technologies on site would give patients access to the best care possible close to home.

“It is exciting to be able to offer patients world-leading technology close to home and get the benefits of these minimally-invasive procedures which can enable them to recover faster in hospital and at home, and sometimes experience less pain,” she said.

“The robotic technology enables precise incisions which can make a big difference to recovery and pain for some patients."

Lisa explained that surgeons were also now able to add to the body of research about robotic surgery to better understand the benefits going forward.

“This will help us better understand the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery compared to open procedures, which for some people includes decreased time in hospital, reduced blood loss and transfusions, less pain and less time needed before patients can return to work,” she said.
