The poppy, which is located at the entrance to the Central Victorian Cardiology Department at the hospital, was donated for patients, caregivers and visitors in remembrance of loved ones and family members who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice in all conflicts, while protecting our country.

It was made by RSL members Ian Phillips and Alan Smith who spent more than 50 hours designing recycled steel and offcuts into the shape, fabricated and then welded together.

The poppy was then powder coated to enhance the red of a Flanders Field poppy.

St John of God Bendigo Hospital Department of Veterans Affairs Liaison Officer Lisa Gellatly said the poppy was a great way to pay tribute to the sacrifice of so many during wars.

"We thank the RSL for their time and effort in creating the poppy, particularly Ian and Alan," she said.
