The 11 bed unit will cater for patients who have an anticipated hospital stay of 24 hours or less.

St John of God Ballarat Hospital Chief Executive Officer Alex Demidov said this new unit would help to improve access to emergency care and decrease the incidence of ambulance by-pass when Emergency Department beds were full.

“The creation of this new unit has come in response to community need as our emergency presentations have grown year on year," he said.

"This has driven us to continue to grow our service and build a new unit to complement the Emergency Department.

“The unit will also improve patient flow through the department which will enable our doctors and nurses to provide the very best care possible for our patients and the community.”

Each room within the short stay unit will have its own private amenities including bathroom. A communal area will give visiting families a space to relax while their loved one is receiving treatment.

The short stay unit is being created in partnership with local company H.Troon Ballarat and is expected to be complete in June 2019.
