Rachael knew she needed help not long after her first child was born. When her son was two months old, she found herself wrestling with her emotions and struggled finding fulfilment in her new role as a mother.
Initially she had heard about St John of God Raphael Services during a mother’s group session, but it was after reaching out to the PANDA hotline for help that she decided to contact her GP for a referral to the service.
“I was feeling angry, frustrated and was crying a lot – I just didn’t feel like myself and I was struggling.
“I had previously been referred to a private psychologist, but could not afford the exorbitant fees. I did not find the help that I needed until I accessed St John of God Raphael Services in Berwick.
“The service is specifically aimed at pregnancy and parenthood and I found this to be paramount in my treatment and sessions,” Rachael said.
Since attending Raphael Services, Rachael is enjoying her day-to-day life and her role as a mum.
“I feel like myself again. I feel happy, and able to give my son the love and attention he deserves – something I feel that I couldn’t provide initially,” Rachael said.
Rachael’s message to other parents who may be in a similar situation is to feel no shame in reaching out for support.
“If you, like myself, feel as though you are in the depths of despair and cannot find enjoyment in your role as a mum or dad, I urge you to seek help.
“I can promise you that you are not alone in your feelings and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Please take that step in asking for help because it will change your life.
“I owe it to Raphael Services for helping me through what was one of the most difficult times of my life,” Rachael said.
Over the past year St John of God Raphael Services has provided more than 30,700 individual counselling sessions to over 2,500 parents. This includes treatment to 102 dads.
