The program, now in its third year, included participants (pictured above) from Dili’s national hospital, the Timrorese Ministry of Health and, for the first time, participants from a regional health facility, Cova Lima Referral hospital, who were funded by John Snow International (JSI), a large American health partner.
The nine-month program requires participants to complete workbooks, participate in mentoring and undertake quality improvement projects, which St John of God Timor-Leste Country Manager, Ben Dingle, said would contribute to improving patient care and organisational processes.
“Cova Lima hospital, for example, started formalised bedside handover, hospital waste segregation and clinical auditing for the first time in the hospital’s history because of this program,” Ben said.
“The program not only encourages participants to take pride in their work, but allows them to witness how their projects can have positive impacts in their respective work areas.”
The HMP provides participants with the knowledge and skills needed to best lead teams, as well as enable them to undertake quality improvement processes to create positive changes in practice across hospital units.
The HMP was implemented as a pilot program in 2016 as part of the overall Nursing and Midwifery Development Program by St John of God Health Care’s international health team, and following its success, has continued to grow each year.
St John of God Health Care’s work in Timor-Leste is proudly supported by ConocoPhillips as operator of the Bayu-Undan Joint Venture.
