The Pathology Development Program focuses on building the capacity of laboratory staff at Timor-Leste’s national hospital in Dili, the Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares (HNGV), and the National Reference Laboratory.
We have been delivering the program in partnership with the Timorese Ministry of Health since 2004.
Through the program, our caregivers work alongside Timorese pathology technicians to develop their capacity to meet standards that ensure all test results are accurate. This means doctors are better able to diagnose and treat patients.
Our team has also supported improvements to pathology facilities and equipment at the national hospital.
The first phase of the Pathology Development Program introduced automated testing to Dili’s two main pathology laboratories. Previously, all testing had been done manually and the results were very unreliable.
Automating testing tripled the number of samples the lab is able to process, significantly improved the reliability of results and allowed pathology staff to screen for more diseases.
The second phase of the Program began in 2011 and focused on training Timorese pathology staff to improve their understanding of key scientific and diagnostic principles. Our caregivers work side-by-side with their Timorese colleagues to provide on-the-job role role-modeling, training and skills transfer.
Our Pathology Development Program caregivers are based in Timor-Leste where they live and work for a minimum of two years.
In November 2014, we launched a pathology courier service to provide Dili’s community health centres with access to accurate disease diagnosis. The service saves patients from having to journey to the national hospital to have their blood taken.
During the same year, we launched a new collection centre at the national hospital, significantly increasing the quality of blood samples taken and improving the time it takes for those results to be returned to the patient’s doctor. This has improved the reliability of tests and provided a better patient experience.
