Personality disorders

Personality disorders affect your mood and impulse sense of control and can make everyday life difficult to manage. We are here to help when you need support to better understand and manage your moods and impulses.

St John of God Health Care personality disorders treatment

If you need professional, expert and compassionate care to help you manage self-destructive or impulsive behaviour, St John of God Health Care has a number of options to assist.

People with personality disorders may experience overwhelming emotions, deep feelings of insecurity and impulsive behaviour. Some people describe a deep fear of being left alone, an unclear perception of self-worth and frequent changes to emotions such as anger.

How can treatment for personality disorders help?

Treatment for personality disorders will help you to understand and manage your moods and behaviour.

You may be able to access one of our treatment programs including:

  • in-hospital stays
  • counselling sessions
  • individual and/ or group therapy programs
  • one-on-one appointments with a private psychiatrist

We focus on increasing your own capability to manage your disorder and we work with you to develop a treatment plan around your needs, which may include medications, psychotherapies, exercise, nutrition and pastoral care.

You may receive dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) that helps you to identify your negative thinking patterns and changes them into positive behaviours. Depending on your diagnosis you may also receive cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy or schema-focused therapy.

Our treatment aims to improve your overall quality of life and minimising suicidal behaviour, deliberate self-harm, substance use, anger and depression.

Depending on the service, you may have access to an experienced team of psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses and allied health professionals in a safe, calm and caring environment.

How to access our personality disorder programs?

Speak to your general practitioner (GP) about how you are feeling and share any behaviours that concern you. Your GP will be able to provide the referral that is needed to enroll in our treatment programs. If you are concerned about your emotional wellbeing or a loved one you can make an admission enquiry on the form below today so that we can help you to better understand your care options.

Our programs costs are covered by most private health insurers. Any excess and/or co-payment depends on your level of cover.

Programs provided by St John of God Mental Wellbeing Services are available free of charge with a GP referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan as part of our commitment as a not-for-profit organisation to improve community health and wellbeing.

Public hospital mental health care is available for eligible consumers free of charge through our State government funded facilities at St John of God Midland Public Hospital and for older adult care at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital.

We can provide care through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Transport Accident Commission (VIC only) and Work Cover. We also welcome self-funded consumers.
