Dr Levitt was recognised as a part of the Australia Day 2023 Honours List.

Dr Levitt, who worked with St John of God Health Care since 1990, said he was honoured and humbled to receive this award.

“It’s especially humbling to receive an honour that has previously been extended to so many people I admire and regard as outstanding in their respective fields,” he said.

“I am most proud of the assistance I have been able to give to my colleagues, both Australian and international graduates, and often at the outset of their careers, in progressing through the system. They’ve all been capable people, but it has been a pleasure to offer them direction or advice in pursuit of their aspirations.”

St John of God Health Care Board Chair Hon Kerry Sanderson AC CVO congratulated Dr Levitt.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have Michael on our Board. He brings a wealth of clinical knowledge and understanding of the experience within our hospitals and in health care more generally,” she said.

“This knowledge, coupled with his compassionate approach, his values and passion to improve health outcomes for our communities makes him a valuable Board member.

“He is a worthy recipient of this honour and we are all delighted that he has been recognised.”

As a general and colorectal surgeon, Dr Levitt practices at St John of God Subiaco Hospital and has held a variety of roles within the organisation.

Working in both the private and public sector he is highly regarded for his work in recent years with the Western Australian Department of Health and other medical professional associations.

Most notably, this includes holding the role of Chief Medical Officer of Western Australia (2018-2021) and Clinician Member of the Medical Board of WA since 2014. He is also a Consultant Medical Director at the Western Australian Country Health Service.

He has also authored various books and journals, such as the Happy Bowel (2018).
