Community Drug Service Team

Our expertise

The Community Drug Service Team provides a comprehensive service having both a treatment and prevention focus. The team is responsive to the needs of individuals and their families as well as supporting local community initiatives that deal with alcohol and drug issues. The service responds to other needs as appropriate, based on the premise of reducing the harm associated with alcohol and other drug use within the community.

The Team has boundaries extending north from Cottesloe to Yanchep and east to Alexander Drive, including Ballajura.

Offices are located at Subiaco and Joondalup with outreach offered through further sessions at Scarborough, Whitfords, Wanneroo, Mirrabooka, Balga, Yanchep, Lancelin and Marangaroo.

Our Services to the community

Specifically, the team provides:

  • Drug and alcohol counselling to individuals and their families
  • Support to mainstream human services providers in addressing alcohol and drug issues
  • Services for youth
  • Group programs
  • Support to community groups and assistance with the planning, implementation and co-ordination of responses to alcohol and drug issues in the north metropolitan area.
  • Support for Local Drug Action Groups (LDAGS) as they develop in the area
    Education and program development in response to identified community needs

Our Team

Our team forms part of the outreach services at St John of God Hospital, Subiaco and is comprised of:

  • 1 Manager
  • 1 Senior Counsellor/Educator
  • 6 Counsellor/Educators
  • 1 Community Youth Worker
  • 1 Full-time and 1 Part-time Receptionist/Administrator

Further support from the services of St John of God Hospital, Subiaco where appropriate.

All team members are well qualified in disciplines ranging through social work, counselling, youth studies, psychology, community education, psychotherapy and addiction studies.

Local Drug Action Groups

Local Drug Action Groups are run by volunteers within the community who give their time to prevent and reduce drug abuse in their local areas and take on a practical, local focus. The North Metropolitan Community Drug Service Team currently supports nine Local Drug Action Groups located at Yanchep, Clarkson/Merriwa, Wanneroo, Joondalup, Whitfords, Tuart Hill, Balga/Girrawheen, Western Suburbs and UWA.
