Social Outreach and Advocacy

As part of achieving our Mission as a Catholic health care organisation, St John of God Health Care is committed to providing significant care and relief for people who are oppressed, materially poor, powerless and disadvantaged.

St John of God Health Care has an established Social Outreach and Advocacy program providing a coordinated and integrated group-wide framework for extending our mission beyond the walls of our hospitals and diagnostic services. We commit a significant proportion of our revenue to providing support for our Social Outreach and Advocacy program. In 2004/05, $7.5million was set aside to fund programs, increasing to $14.2million in 2005/06 and over $15.2million in 2006/07.

Our hospitals and diagnostic services are providing support to their local communities through numerous programs including supporting homeless youth, refuges for men and women, soup kitchens, community schooling and struggling families.

In addition, we have developed group-wide strategies, services and advocacy initiatives in six key areas of need, which were selected in response to clear evidence of ill health and disadvantage.  Using St John of God Health Care's skills and resources, we are able to make a positive difference to the community within these areas.

The areas of need we have identified for specific action are:

Ways in which we become involved with the community include:

  • Sharing of clinical expertise - offering and participating in programs which draw on and further develop our core competence as an acute health care provider.
  • Employment, education and training - promoting opportunities throughout our organisation, wherever possible.
  • Providing management experience - sharing policies, expertise and management development opportunities.
  • Funding - providing funding for particular strategies.
  • Research - supporting applied research and partnering with research bodies to assist in addressing key health issues and needs.
  • Advocacy - assisting in advocating for change consistent with our expertise and credibility in the area.
