Your First Year
This is your first step in a structured program and consists of a two week comprehensive orientation program, three fully funded study days and six graduate forums.
You will experience three rotations, giving you sound knowledge in the following speciality areas:
Day Procedure/Endoscopy
General surgery/ENT/plastics
Orthopaedics
Vascular/gynaecology/urology
Cardiology/oncology/general medicine
Rehabilitation/neurosurgery/respiratory
Your Second Year
The aim of the second year program is to provide Registered Nurses with higher levels of skill and critical thinking relevant to their practice area and to provide a stimulating, interesting and challenging work environment with support offered by a structured program.
There are several options available for you to choose from for your clinical placement. These include:
A rotation into one or more speciality areas such as the Emergency Department, Intensive Care/Coronary Care and or Theatre.
To work in one or more general or speciality ward areas such as general medicine, surgery or orthopaedics
To apply for a position in the Post Graduate Diploma in Midwifery Nursing Program
To apply for a position in the Post Graduate Diploma in Orthopaedic Nursing Program
To apply for a position in the Post Graduate Diploma in Perioperative Nursing Program
This year also includes three fully funded study days and two forums.
Your Third Year
The third year of the program will be a year of developing leadership skills, enhancing critical thinking, reflective practice and opportunities to take up leadership roles.

The Role of the Professional Nurse in Regards to Research and Education.
This year also includes three fully funded study days with opportunities for further training in areas such as stomal therapy/chemotherapy/continence courses or assessing in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, epidural management and peripheral intravenous cannulation.

Master of Clinical Nursing Critical Care St John of God Hospital Murdoch, in conjunction with Curtin University, provides a supportive and caring environment to develop registered nurses into advanced practitioners in critical care nursing.
The Master of Clinical Nursing qualification allows nurse clinicians to work in their selected area while expanding their individual specialty knowledge and competence. Theoretical and practical knowledge is complemented by the challenges of a significant clinical project.
The Master of Clinical Nursing can be studied full-time or part-time, with exit points at the Post-graduate Certificate, Post-graduate Diploma and Master levels.

Structure of the Program
All students must have at least six months' experience in the Intensive Care Unit and be working full-time (76 hours per fortnight).
The course consists of:
four units undertaken over two semesters (to achieve diploma level)
Advanced Nursing Science
Advanced Nursing Practice
Advanced Nursing Science 2
Advanced Nursing Practice 2
13 study days per semester at ECU
Personal Portfolio Journal
Two assignments per semester
One exam per semester
Completion of a Clinical Competencies Portfolio
Throughout the course, participants will be supported by a dedicated Clinical Instructor to facilitate their learning and experience. Students will also have an experienced clinical nurse as a preceptor and have the opportunity to work at Royal Perth Hospital in ICU for three months.

Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery For those wishing to become a midwife, Murdoch offers the opportunity to share the miracle of birth, offering clinical placement in a supportive and caring environment.
Murdoch's Midwifery Program provides a clinical placement where nurses can develop the skills and confidence required for registration as a Midwife in Division One of the Nurses Board of Western Australia. Enrolment to a University undertaking a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery is a requirement before a position in our program will be offered.
Structure of the Program
Employed on a 12 month contract
Shift work for 21, then 28 or 35 hours per week
Six weeks annual leave (University theory time, study time or examinations may be required during annual leave)
Two week ward orientation

Registered Midwife Graduate Program
The one year program is aimed at providing a career pathway from the transition of student midwife to graduate midwife in a supportive environment.
Structured support is offered by the Learning and Development team and clinical midwives.

The aim of the second six months is to provide registered Midwives with higher levels of skill and critical thinking relevant to their practice and provide a stimulating, interesting and challenging work environment with support offered.
Midwives are encouraged to pursue an area of their choice, eg. breastfeeding, parent education, research, etc.

Perioperative Nurse Programs St John of God Hospital Murdoch offers training opportunites aimed at facilitating new nurses in a supportive environment to become multi-skilled perioperative nurses.
Our programs are based on a tailored approach to learning, allowing students to build upon their professional studies and creat career pathways to suit each participant.
Introduction to Perioperative Nursing
This six month program for registered and enrolled nurses is designed to provide intensive training for nurses. The program targets nurses with minimal perioperative experience and has the following features:

preceptor and clinical support from the Learning and Development Department
rotation through specialty areas
fully-funded study days
Graduate Diploma in Perioperative Nursing
This 12-month program for registered Nurses is affiliated with Fremantle Hospital and Notre Dame University and aims to provide a supportive environment where Registered Nurses can become competent perioperative nurses.
The program includes enrolment in studies at Notre Dame University and employment at St John of God Hospital Murdoch for 54 weeks, with confirmation of satisfactory academic progress as outlined in the course curriculum.
Program participants are employed under the St John of God Healthcare Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA). There are opportunities for ongoing employment at the completion of the course.
The program includes a comprehensive orientation period with ongoing preceptor and staff development support, with clinical rotations through all specialty areas.
Learning and Assessment approaches include lectures, workshops, discussion, guided reflection, tutorials, self-directed learning, clinical practice assessment and theoretical assessment. Funding is available to assist participants through St John of God Hospital Murdoch.

Graduate Enrolled Nurse 2-year Development Program
St John of God Hospital Murdoch is committed to making the transition from student to professional nurse an exciting and rewarding challenge. The Enrolled Nurse Graduate Program is aimed at providing a career pathway from the transition of undergraduate to graduate nurse. Structured support is offered by the learning & Development Team, Clinical Support Nurses and the Preceptor Program. We provide an experiential and supportive environment in which to learn and gain knowledge and skills.
