St John of God Chapel Heritage Chapel, with stained glass windows and pipe organs, for hire.
In 1886, the Sisters of the Good Shepherd arrived in Christchurch, occupying the site the current hospital is situated upon. Adjoining their then Convent (which became our former hospital), they built a beautiful Chapel, which was consecrated in 1911.
The Chapel's German made stained glass windows are considered the finest in Australasia. They were not installed until 1923 because of the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918). For safe keeping during the war, the windows were stored underground and then shipped to New Zealand when the seas were safe.
Today, the Chapel is available for religious services, including weddings and christenings, and appropriate community activities.
