St John of God Bunbury Hospital is a 145-bed private hospital offering a range of medical and surgical services to communities in the south west.
We encourage local and visiting doctors to provide services at our hospital, to maintain and improve health services available to the region.
Direct admission to St John of God Bunbury Hospital
General practitioners can now admit patients to St John of God Bunbury hospital without requiring admitting rights.
Direct admission is suitable for non-emergency conditions and allows patients to bypass long waits in the Emergency Department.
If your patient has private health insurance and would like to be admitted to our hospital for treatment, please follow the instructions below.
1. Contact the hospital
To ensure quick admission,please contact our Access Manager/After Hours Manager for a fund check on (08) 9722 1943.
2. Provide patient details
Please provide the following information for each patient
- full name
- date of birth
- health fund or DVA details
- provisional diagnosis
3. Determine patient suitability
Direct admission may be appropriate for patients who present with:
- mild heart failure
- urinary tract infection
- cellulitis
- acute respiratory infection
- deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism
Please note: some patients may need to be triaged via the Emergency Department at Bunbury Regional Hospital before they can be admitted.
4. Complete direct admission

- Submit a direct admission referral
- Notify the patient of the outcome

Accreditation
All medical practitioners admitting patients, consulting or operating on patients at our hospital must be accredited and hold clinical privileges.

Applications for credentialing should be accompanied by copies of:
- your primary degree
- details of specialist recognition (where relevant)
- receipt of payment of current professional registration
- receipt of payment and certificate of currency of current indemnity cover
- resume including two written referees
- current national police clearance
- current working with children check.
All practitioners seeking accreditation must nominate one emergency back-up. This practitioner must be:
- of the same specialist group
- an accredited practitioner at St John of God Health Care
- currently reside and practice in Bunbury while they have inpatients at the hospital.
Subject to initial review, the Chief Executive Officer may grant a three month provisional accreditation status.
Our Scope of Practice Committee meets bi-monthly to consider the scope of practice and recommendations of accreditation. If approved, accreditation may be granted for periods of up to three years.
