Adventure therapy
The program works with a group of eight young
people of the same gender, with participants assessed for their
suitability for the program.
He Haerenga O Wananga is an outdoor adventure
program focusing on self challenge and learning for young people
seeking opportunities for developing leadership and increasing self
confidence, life skills, resilience and low risk behaviour. Health
education is also provided in the program.
Outdoor learning
The program integrates outdoor learning
experiences with group and individual sessions. It employs
experiential methods of learning and role development in order to
develop young people's inner resilience and resources.
The participation of families is encouraged so
they can support and monitor the young person's changes in
behaviour.
Making choices
In a safe and confidential setting, young
people are encouraged to think about their life stories and
consider the causes and effects of the choices they make.
Effective group
bonding and facilitation lessens anxiety, encourages confidence and
creates an environment conducive to personal growth and change.
