Horizon House Broome
Opened in March 2011, James Garnaut Horizon
House, Broome is our first home to provide specific support
for Indigenous young people in need of long term accommodation and
care.
The Broome house was also the first to be opened since the
transfer of Horizon House to St John of God Health Care’s
Social Outreach and Advocacy services
from the Foundation.
The provision of specific care for
young Indigenous men in The Kimberley, builds on St John of
God Health Care's considerable experience in Aboriginal health
through the Strong Family, Strong Culture
service operating across regional Western Australia.
Broome was the eighth Horizon House to be opened in Australia,
and was blessed by the Most Reverend Christopher Saunders DD,
Bishop of Broome, after a welcome to country ceremony performed by
Yawuru elder Cissy Djiagween.
Then Patron of Horizon House, His Excellency Dr Ken Michael AC,
Governor of Western Australia cut the ribbon to mark the
opening of Horizon House and the team of carers living in the home
are now taking referrals from young people who need
long-term accommodation.
The James Garnaut Horizon House, Broome is named in honour of
Raymond and Joy James and Neale and Eunice Garnaut's contribution
to the less fortunate. Land for the house was contributed by the
Sisters of St John of God.
