Nursing and Midwifery

Nurses conducting research discussions

In 2009, work began to establish the St John of God Health Care Nursing Research Reference group with the aim of developing a working model for nursing research.

The goals of the group are to:

  • Inform and advance clinical practice.
  • Influence policy development.
  • Improve outcomes for patients, their families and nurses.
  • Actively engage nurses and midwives in the research process at all levels within the organisation.
  • Integrate research into nursing practice at our Hospital and more broadly as appropriate.
  • Enhance interdisciplinary team research and practice as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with university schools of nursing and midwifery and other faculties as appropriate.

    Developing a culture and system of nursing research within our Hospital is integral to our growth and development as an employer of choice and a provider of excellent nursing and midwifery care.

Our approach to nursing research is broad based, collaborative and flexible - ranging from small unit-based projects through to group, multi-site studies and participation in national or international research projects relevant to nursing and midwifery.

In 2009, we confirmed our affiliation with Curtin University School of Nursing and Midwifery to continue research going forward. In collaboration with Professor Phillip Della, Head of School, and his team, there are many research projects in progress which include;

  • The review of nursing research opportunities within a private hospital. The information gained from this project will guide our research efforts into the future.
  • The removal time for indwelling catheter.

Other projects are currently under review including a national study focusing on fall prevention.
