Subiaco Colorectal - cancer research

Established in 2006, Subiaco Colorectal comprises four leading surgeons in the field of colorectal cancer whose aim is to 'promote the management of colorectal cancer through excellenProfessor Platellce in clinical service and research'.

Director of Colorectal Cancer Research, Winthrop Professor Cameron Platell, heads the Unit and is renowned for his surgical management and research for colorectal cancer. With more than 10 years experience, Professor Platell completed the Australian Colorectal Training Fellowship in 1995 and commenced practice in 1996. His specialties include rectal cancer surgery, transanal endoscopic microsurgery and laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

Other members of the group include Mr Michael Levitt, who has extensive experience in colorectal cancer surgery, Mr Patrick Tan, who specialises in incontinence surgery, and Mr Gregory Makin, who has a special interest in laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

Collectively the group has more than 40 years experience in managing colorectal cancer. One of Subiaco Colorectal's main interests is ongoing research into colorectal cancer, led by Professor Platell. A multidisciplinary meeting is held weekly which is attended by oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and nuclear medicine physicians. The meeting provides a forum for presenting and discussing the management of all new colorectal cancer patients.

A component of their research includes following up and monitoring all patients treated by the group. With their permission, samples of their cancer tissue are stored and frozen. These samples serve as an invaluable resource for current and future cancer research.

A Clinical Nurse Coordinator in cancer research coordinates colorectal cancer patient care and collates clinical data. Subiaco Colorectal is the first Unit of its kind at our Hospital and is the first time a private hospital in Western Australia has allocated dedicated resources to ongoing clinical research into colorectal cancer.

The Subiaco Colorectal team has an abundance of clinical experience and a national profile for excellence in colorectal cancer management. The Unit hopes to set the standard in Western Australia for colorectal cancer management in terms of clinical results and the quality of patient care and support.
