Patient services at St John of God Hospital Murdoch
Auxiliary
The auxiliary provides volunteer services to the hospital and
support many departments. They provide additional services to
patients including mobile library, delivery of newspapers and
attending to patients’ flowers. Additionally, the auxiliary raises
funds which are used throughout the hospital to benefit caregivers,
patients and visitors
Call bell
A handpiece (call bell) near your bed will allow you to call for
attention at any time. A caregiver will be close by to attend to
your needs. Most wards have a silent paging system so you will not
hear a bell.
Chapel
The Chapel is interdenominational and is located on the ground
floor opposite the lifts. You are invited to visit this tranquil
place for reflection, prayer or a few quiet moments. Our in-house
television network broadcasts Mass and other Chapel services on
channel 15.
Clinical services
During your stay you may be referred to one or more of the
following:
- Nutrition and dietetic services
- Diagnostic cardiology services
- Acute pain services
- Stomal Therapy/Wound Management/ Specialist Breast Care
Nurse
- Diabetes education
- Infection control
- Occupational therapy
- Physiotherapy
Please be aware that some of these services may attract a fee
and we encourage you to ask the service provider prior to
commencing treatment.
Dining
Our chefs prepare delicious and healthy meals fresh each
day. Daily menus have been designed in accordance with
Australian Dietary Guidelines and offer a wide range of meal
choices to cater for your tastes and special needs.
Each day you will receive a menu card from which to choose your
meals. If you have any particular dietary requirements please
discuss these with your caregiver.
Your meal will be delivered to you by a caregiver on your ward.
Approximate meal times are as follows:
- Breakfast 7.15am - 8am
- Morning tea 9.30am - 10am
- Lunch 11.30am - 12.30pm
- Afternoon tea 2.45pm - 3.15pm
- Dinner 5.30pm - 6.30pm
- Supper 7.30pm - 8.00pm
Florist
Flowers of St Johns located alongside Ferns Gift Shop, offers a
wide range of bouquets, floral arrangements and gifts. Gift baskets
and special occasion bouquets are also available on order.

Garden area
Depending on your medical condition and doctor’s advice, you are
welcome to relax in our peaceful gardens; however, please inform
your caregiver before leaving the ward
Gift Shop
Ferns Gift Shop, located on the ground floor next to Ferns Café,
offers cards, newspapers, confectionery, newspapers, magazines,
toiletries, stamps, gifts, public phone cards and baby baskets. The
gift shop is open 9.00am to 8.00pm weekdays and 9.00am to 5.00pm
weekends
Housekeeping
A Patient Care Assistant (PCA) will tidy your room each day.
Interpreter
Professional interpreting services are available for non-English
speaking or hearing impaired patients when an explanation regarding
clinical care or procedures is required. Please arrange this
service through your caregiver
Internet
Your laptop can be connected to the telephone socket to gain
internet access.
Lifts
Lifts are located opposite the gift shop. In the interests of
patient care and privacy, you or your visitors may be asked to
vacate the lift. We thank you for your cooperation and
understanding.
Local accommodation
There is a variety of accommodation options available within the

Mail
Incoming mail will be distributed directly to you. Outgoing mail
with postage stamp may be left at your ward’s nursing station.
Stamps are available from Ferns Gift Shop.

Newspapers
Newspapers are available for purchase from members of the
auxiliary who visit wards from 7.30am, Monday to Saturday.
Patient lounge
A patient lounge is situated on each floor of the hospital. This
is available for you to meet with visitors or other patients.
Pastoral care
Our pastoral services department
coordinates and provides emotional and spiritual support for
patients and their families in times of person need or anxiety.
Patient library services
The auxiliary provides a free mobile library service of books
and magazines for patients, each weekday. Please return all library
items to your caregiver before discharge.
Patient flowers
Patient flowers are refreshed and cared for by auxiliary
members. In the interests of patient safety, flowers are not
permitted in the Intensive Care/Coronary Care Unit.
Pharmacy
For outpatients and the general community, a retail pharmacy
operates from within the medical clinic. Located near the entrance
of the medical clinic, the pharmacy is open 9am to 6pm weekdays,
and 9pm to 12.30pm Saturday. For further information please

Radio
A selection of AM and FM radio stations are available through
your television along with the option of pre-programmed CD
music.
Smoking
Being a hospital facility, we actively discourage smoking.
Smoking is totally banned inside all hospital buildings, including
entrances, balconies and verandas. If you wish to smoke, you are
requested to speak with your caregiver to seek advice on designated
smoking areas.
Telephones
Each bed has its own telephone equipped with local, STD and ISD
facilities. Charges will apply for STD, ISD and calls to mobile
phones.

(there will not be a dial tone)
A telephone attachment for hearing impaired people is available.
Please advise your caregivers if you wish to use this device.
The use of a mobile phone is restricted to public areas only. A
payphone is located in the main reception foyer.
Television
The television set receives all Perth ‘free-to¬air’ stations. A
free in-house movie service is available. Please view Information
channel 1 for movie titles and schedules.
Valuables
A small locked drawer is provided in each room for your personal
effects and valuables. Please ensure this drawer is locked at all
times and the key is not accessible to others.
Personal effects, such as glasses and dentures, are your
responsibility. While our caregivers take every care with
your personal effects, we do not accept responsibility for any loss
or damage.
We strongly encourage you to leave your valuables, such as large
amounts of cash, bank cards and ‘non-essential’ jewellery, at
home.
