Community

While St John of God Health Care is primarily known for our hospitals and pathology services, we also have a long history working with and helping people within the community.

We are committed to providing significant care and relief for people experiencing disadvantage throughout Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region, particularly in areas where we have identified gaps in current service provision.

St John of God Hospital Murdoch Social Outreach and Advacy (SOA) activities currently include:

  • Counselling for people with common mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression, at St John of God Counselling Centre, located in Fremantle
  • Outreach and support for young people and their families at Cockburn Youth Centre, including innovative group work for young people not attending school
  • Social and Emotional Wellbeing Outreach to the South Lake Ottey Family and Neighbourhood Centre, including advocacy and community awareness activities
  • Support for an early intervention program in the South Lake community aimed at 6-12 year old children
  • Outreach counselling at St Patrick’s Community Support Centre to clients who are homeless and otherwise disadvantaged
  • Funding to support primary care and Allied Health Services at St Patrick’s Community Support Centre, through Hands-on-Health and Street Doctor
  • Funding and accommodation to support after hours counselling service by Lifeline Australia
  • Support for Red Cross emergency care with weekly contributions for their soup kitchen
  • Charity of the Year fundraising

Murdoch Outreach 1How you can get involved

Murdoch caregivers take great pride in their community involvement. Apart from employment opportunities within our Social Outreach and Advocacy activities, Murdoch caregivers have the opportunity to give back to their community by:

  • Raising money for our Charity of the Year
  • Volunteering with the Red Cross soup kitchen
  • Contributing and packing items for care packs for street-based people
  • Taking advantage of 'community support leave' which enables caregivers to pursue worthy community and charitable activities
  • Volunteering for Lifeline as telephone counsellors
