Undergraduate and vocational career pathways

nursesSt John of God Hospital Murdoch in partnership with Challenger Institute of Technology coordinates training programs delivered on site that offer the opportunity for individuals to gain a nationally recognised qualifications.

The Certificate III in Health Service Assistance

This 20 week course comprising of 13 units of competence. Following a full week of orientation the students attend 2 days per week which comprises of one day in the ‘classroom’ covering the theoretical component and the second day practical placement in the wards.

The students are under the supervision of a preceptor (ward PCA) whilst on their practical component. They rotate on 3 occasions providing an opportunity to see how other departments operate.

Challenger Institute provides support to participants when undertaking practical placements. This qualification is suitable as a pathway into Enrolled Nursing at a technical Institute.

Diploma of Nursing Program (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing)

St John of God Hospital Murdoch along with Challenger Institute developed a Diploma of Nursing Program (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing).

On completion of the 12 month program students are eligible for registration with the Nurses and Midwives Board of WA as an Enrolled Nurse.

This program is innovative in two ways:

  • Restructuring of the program has reduced the course from 18 months to a 12 month program.
  • The program closely resembles the normal working day of a nurse rather than the working day of a VET student, which realistically prepares the student for the workplace.  Students attend tutorial sessions within the hospital and clinical placements occur at St John of God Hospital Murdoch and other facilities, eg Aged Care facilities.
