New position boosts Murdoch’s academic profile

Wednesday 29 June 2011

St John of God Hospital Murdoch’s academic profile has received another boost with the announcement of a federally funded new professorial position in Emergency Medicine.

Following on from the recent appointment of an inaugural Chair of Nursing, Murdoch will establish a Professor (or Associate Professor) of Emergency Medicine.

St John of God Health Care has received Australian Government funding under the “More Doctors and Nurses for Emergency Departments” initiative. Murdoch will receive $1.3 million over three years to help fund the position.

The position will be jointly sponsored by St John of God Hospital Murdoch and University of Notre Dame.

The aim of the initiative is to increase the standard of clinical training and supervision provided to emergency medicine trainees and students, to build capacity to retain and develop Murdoch’s clinical workforce and establish effective training networks with EDs in other private and public hospitals.

Murdoch Acting Chief Executive Officer Colin Young said the hospital was committed to further education, training and research to fulfil its community responsibilities.

“Our Emergency Department already supports Emergency Medicine trainees, medical students, GPs undertaking a diploma in Emergency Medicine, paramedic trainees and physician assistant trainees.

The professorial position will provide academic leadership in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, as well as new research in the field of Emergency Medicine,” said Mr Young.

"This new position, with the recently announced Chair of Nursing, and the soon to be constructed Training and Education Centre, will further support  Murdoch's commitment to clinical research and education.”
