Excellence in care

Murdoch TheatreThe community has an expectation that they will receive a high level of care and service when they are admitted to a private hospital.

At St John of God Hospital Murdoch, we have developed a reputation for giving outstanding patient focused care with the highest level of clinical excellence.

Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS)

Following a regular periodic review by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards in 2009, we gained Extensive Achievement assessments, the second highest possible, on nine of the fourteen mandatory criteria.

These covered clinical and non-clinical areas, with acclamation in particular for our infection control, continuous quality improvement and risk management systems; the way we involve patients in care planning; and our management of patient feedback and complaints.

This external audit result confirmed our ongoing commitment to, and achievement in, clinical quality and patient safety.

The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards is an independent, not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to improving the quality of health care in Australia. Accreditation is a formal process to assist in the delivery of safe, high quality health care based on standards and processes devised and developed by health care professionals for health care services.

Joanna Briggs Institute endorsement

St John of God Hospital Murdoch was the first St John of God Health Care hospital to receive the ‘tick of approval’ from the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), which is the endorsement of our hospital as an evidence-based best practice organisation that is committed to providing excellence in patient care.

This endorsement demonstrates to our patients and the community that we deliver excellence in care and we can benchmark, against other health care organisations, our clinical practices.

To achieve endorsement from JBI, we underwent a process that included two clinical practice audits, within a 12-month period, demonstrating that evidenced based clinical practice is in use. In addition, to keep the endorsement, we need to undertake an annual clinical audit and provide ongoing education to nurses, amongst a list of items.

What the endorsement shows is that our hospital uses evidence based best practice in the delivery of patient care. ‘Evidence Based Best Practice’ means that we deliver patient care that is based on experience, expertise and the results of research.

JBI is a global organisation, established in South Australia, whose primary purpose is to improve health care practices and outcomes for patients worldwide, with over 4,000 associate members worldwide, including Canada, USA, England, Singapore, Korea and Turkey.

Patient, doctor and staff satisfaction

We recorded very good caregiver, inpatient and doctor satisfaction results. Our 2009 patient survey showed only one other private hospital in Australia of comparable size (300 beds or more) received a higher overall rating for care and service.

In the 2008 Employee Perspective Survey our caregivers’ ranked the hospital very highly compared to other hospitals across Australia, in the way in which we develop, nurture and support them.
