Environmental stewardship
Environmental stewardship is a key
component of our hospital’s strategic and operational planning, and
through an Environmental Action Plan, we are ensuring legislative
compliance, sustainable facilities management, and caregiver
education and involvement.
We have comprehensive environmental strategy that encompasses
ways of monitoring and reducing our emissions related to energy
use, our water consumption, and our management of waste. The
Environmental Management Committee regularly reviews these aspects
of the hospital's operations and implements initiatives aimed at
further improvement.
We continue to upgrade the hospital’s plant facilities to take
advantage of newer and efficient technology that reduces overall
energy usage:
- The installation of digital controls in the hospital’s air
handling system is likely to reduce the
hospital’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2.93%
- A Energy Manager Software allows the hospital to monitor and
report actual energy usage at department level, and it will
initiate control measures in times of peak electricity demand
- Water usage is being limited with the installation of flow
restricting devices to showers and hand basin taps
- Our caregivers are encouraged to practice sustainable working
habits, including:
Segregating waste appropriately into the correct waste
streams
- Printing documents only when necessary, and to print on both
sides of the paper whenever possible with printer default set to
double sided print
- Leaving an empty room turning lights out and turning off
electrical equipment at the end of the day
- Donating unwanted, usable equipment or supplies to another
department through the Recycling Depot
We are also one of the few hospitals to segregate and actively
recycle smaller items such as batteries, fluorescent tubes, toner
cartridges, used cooking oil and corks.
