St John of God Chapel
Just 15 minutes drive from the centre of
Christchurch is the picturesque heritage-listed St John of God
Chapel. Located in award-winning gardens the Chapel provides the
perfect setting for your special event
In 1886, the Sisters of the Good Shepherd
arrived in Christchurch and their convent occupied the site the
current facility is situated upon. Adjoining the convent they had
built a beautiful chapel, designed by Alfred and Sidney Luttrell
and completed by the Luttrell’s construction company in 1912. The
real jewels in the crown are the magnificent stained glass windows,
reported as being the finest in Australasia. They were made by a
German company, F X Zettler & Co. After manufacture their
delivery was interrupted by the First World War and they were
stored in Munich for several years. They were finally installed in
1926.

In 2005 the Christchurch Organists’
Association gifted a 106 year old Hobday organ to the Chapel. The
organ was originally in St Mary of the Angels Church in Wellington,
then in 1958 came south to Christchurch, firstly to St Peters
Catholic Church and then to the Redemptorist Monastery. In 1967
when the Monastery closed it was gifted to the Christchurch
Organists’ Association on the condition that a new home was found
for it.
