Drug and alcohol program

Drug and alcohol addiction is a problem affecting many Australians from all walks of life.

St John of God Hospital Burwood offers an accepting and safe environment where people can feel comfortable and supported during the rehabilitation process. We treat the whole person, not just an isolated symptom. Our Drug & Alcohol Program is holistic, in that we treat patient’s medical, psychological, physical, lifestyle and spiritual needs. We offer alcohol and other drugs detoxification and short rehabilitation as a 3 week inpatient stay. It is an abstinence based approach aimed at addressing needs of patients who have a substance dependence or behavioural addictions such as gambling. We use both 12-step and Cognitive Behavioural strategies with a strong focus for ongoing care.

We aim not just to return the patient to sobriety but to give them the opportunity to have a positive, fulfilled and long life. Patients attend groups on a variety of topics during their inpatient stay, which makes them aware of the areas of their lives which need to be changed and rebalanced.

To help patients through this journey we provide support, care and supervision by an expert team including: psychiatrists, doctors, nurses, psychologists, chaplains, social workers and pharmacists. In addition to this multi-disciplinary team, every patient has a case manager / primary care nurse who oversees their clinical care pathway.
