Research
St John of God Health Care's growing research program undertakes studies in a number
of areas, often with the assistance of our hospitals. St John of
God Hospital Bunbury has its own interest in research,
participating in a number of studies, both local and
international.
International clinical trial
St John of God Hospital Bunbury has been
chosen as one of four hospitals in Australia to participate in an
international study. The hospital will conduct a clinical trial
into improving treatment for the symptoms of benign prostatic
hyperplasia, a condition which is a common problem among the
ageing male population. If it isn't treated properly it
can lead to further health problems and significantly reduce a
person’s quality of life.
Current medical therapies being used to treat
these symptoms are effective but can produce unwanted side effects,
including hypotensive symptoms and sexual dysfunction. This
clinical trial will compare the effects and safety of a commonly
used medication for benign prostatic hyperplasia with an
alternative drug; a drug which may result in fewer unwanted side
effects, and therefore, improved quality of life.
Participants in the trial are male, aged 45
years and over, who suffer from any of the following symptoms:
- incomplete bladder emptying and intermittent
urinary stream
- weak urinary stream
- straining with urination
- frequent urination and/or urgency
- going to the toilet during the night
Last October St John of God Health Care was
named one of the top recruiters in Australia and New Zealand for
clinical cancer trials. The main benefits of being able to offer
clinical trials is the opportunity for patients to have access to
treatment they otherwise would not be able to get.
