After Your Procedure

What happens after the procedure?berwick day surgery

For day surgery patients:

When you are awake you will be escorted to the Day Surgery recovery area where you will be provided with something to eat and drink. Please note if you have any special dietary requirements contact the hospital prior to your admission or notify the nurses at your admission.

When you have been assessed as ready for discharge you will receive clear instructions for your post-operative care while at home and be assisted to get ready to go home.

For 24 hours after your anaesthetic you are advised not to:

  • Drive, work or operate machinery
  • Drink alcohol
  • Take sedatives unless prescribed
  • Sign any legal documents

When your family member or friend arrives you will be escorted by a staff member to meet them at the Day Surgery waiting area.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to speak with your nurse or doctor at any time during your stay with us or call the Day Surgery Unit on 9709 1494.

Once you return home, depending on your procedure, a nurse may call you to check on your recovery. You may also be given medication prescribed by your treating doctor, please follow all advice and instructions for taking your medication while at home.
